SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Intel on Thursday showed off a wireless electric power system that analysts say could revolutionize modern life by freeing devices from transformers and wall outlets.
Intel chief technology officer Justin Rattner demonstrated a Wireless Energy Resonant Link as he spoke at the California firm's annual developers forum in San Francisco.
Electricity was sent wirelessly to a lamp on stage, lighting a 60 watt bulb that uses more power than a typical laptop computer.
Most importantly, the electricity was transmitted without zapping anything or anyone that got between the sending and receiving units.
Apparently, Intel has found a method to transmit and power devices through the air without damaging humans, by transmitting power through magnetic fields, rather than electric fields. From the article, Intel was able to power a 60W light bulb using this technology.
If this form of wireless electricity proves to be viable for normal use, it could provide a wide range of benefits in the future, such as reduced power cable management and the ability to charge portable electronic devices on the go.
Cool, it's progressing. PopSci ran an article about this a long time ago when it was still in the theory/early experimentation phase. The issue then was range and efficiency. I don't remember the exact numbers but it was <50% efficiency; something like 30%. I think anyway, I'm too lazy to dig the magazine out.
Total wireless-ness is going to be fun at some point in the future.

i can immagine this bringing an ENORMOUS ammount of radiation and interference the air.
so i dont see this comming soon to oure homes.
not to mention the crazy ppl (who go crasy cause they say they get headage from wi-fi or something)
it may not damage humans, but some devices cant handle magnetic fields . so I think there is gonna be lots of research.
Besides, they have to change lots of devices to enable them to use wireless power.
So as ben said, I dont think we will be using wireless power technology anytime soon.
and ben is right there will be lots of people complaining about it .
